Pattern recognition is one of the core pillars of fluid intelligence. It's your brain's ability to detect regularities and rules — and it's highly trainable.
Before looking at answer options, always try to predict the answer yourself. This forces active processing rather than passive recognition.
The 3-Step Method
Row by row: Look across each row first — what changes? Colour, size, shape, number?
Column by column: Then check columns for a different rule
Diagonally: Some patterns only reveal themselves diagonally
Daily Practice
Spend 10 minutes a day on pattern-based puzzles. Sudoku, nonograms, and matrix reasoning games all build this skill rapidly. Apps like Lumosity and Elevate have dedicated pattern modules.
Common Pattern Types
Rotation — shapes rotate 45°, 90°, or 180° each step
Progression — an element is added or removed each step
Alternation — two rules alternate between rows/columns
Mirroring — shapes are reflected across an axis
Most IQ test patterns use only ONE rule per row and ONE rule per column. Find both and the answer becomes obvious.
